Privacy Policy
Family Chromebook Check-In is a small Chrome extension for parents and guardians. It lets a parent know whether a supervised Chromebook is still online and running the extension. This page explains exactly what it does and does not do.
What the extension does
- Every few minutes, and when the device wakes up, it sends one web request to a monitoring service chosen by the parent. The request carries no message, account name, or personal details.
- During set school hours (weekdays, 9 am to 5 pm Central time), it asks the device not to go to sleep because of inactivity. The screen may still dim or turn off. This keeps quiet activities, such as reading, from looking like a stopped device.
- If check-ins stop arriving, the monitoring service alerts the parent.
What information is involved
- What the extension sends: only the check-in request itself. As with any web request, the monitoring service can record the time it arrived and the network address it came from.
- What the extension does not collect: browsing history, web page content, keystrokes, screenshots, the screen contents, files, location, passwords, or the Google account signed in on the device.
- What the extension stores: nothing on the device beyond its own timers.
Permissions, and why they are needed
- Alarms: to send check-ins on a schedule.
- Power: to keep the device awake during school hours.
- Idle: to send a check-in as soon as the device wakes or is used again.
Sharing and selling
We do not sell or rent any information, and we do not use it for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to the check-in function. The only recipient is the monitoring service that delivers the parent's alert.
Who this is for
The extension is meant to be installed by a parent or guardian on a device that they supervise. It is not intended to be hidden from the person who uses the device.
